MRDS Pistol Transition — Course Description

Course overview This course trains sworn law enforcement officers to safely and effectively operate pistols equipped with miniaturized red dot sights (MRDS). It focuses on fundamentals of sighted pistol shooting, platform-specific considerations, malfunction recognition and clearance, and duty-level shooting under realistic time and stress constraints. The program emphasizes safe procedures, retention of accuracy at distance, rapid target acquisition, reliable presentation from common duty positions, and decision-making consistent with use-of-force policy.

Learning objectives

  • Demonstrate safe handling and movement with MRDS-equipped pistols, including positive muzzle awareness and proper manipulations.

  • Establish consistent sight alignment/sight picture and trigger control using a red dot.

  • Conduct efficient and safe drawing, presenting, and re-holstering from a duty holster with MRDS installed.

  • Transition between iron sights and MRDS (where applicable) and manage sight failures.

  • Diagnose and clear common MRDS- and pistol-related malfunctions under time pressure.

  • Engage single and multiple targets at operationally relevant distances with accuracy and controlled speed.

  • Apply tactics for low-light and no-light operations with red-dot equipped pistols, including use of handheld and weapon-mounted lights.

Belt with duty holster and magazine pouches

3+ magazines for each firearm

1000 rounds of ammunition per firearm (provided by agency)

Ear and eye protection

Sharpie marker/ note-taking gear

Appropriate range clothing to accommodate any weather

Food and water as needed
